About

Since a couple of years we are working with the remote online surveillance system of ProctorExam. This system allows us to organise a digital assessment in diferent settings than the digital assessment room (IWO zaal). For example when students are abroad or the students make the exam on their own laptop (BYOD). On this page you can find the information needed to start planning your digital assessment with remote online surveillance.

Scenario's

There are 4 different scenario's were remote online surveillance can be applied.

1. A resit with a small group of students
When a digital assessment took place in the digital assessment room, the resit with a smaller group of students can be arranged with remote online surveillance. It is possible to organise the exam in a lecture room with BYOD or in a computerroom. It is also possible to take the exam from home.

Good practice: Remote surveillance during a resit

2. An exam with access to the internet
In a course it can be useful to let the students search for information on the internet. They learn how to search and apply the information needed in the specific domain. Now, it is possible test these skills during the exam. It is possible to organise the exam in a lecture room with BYOD or in a computerroom. It is also possible to take the exam from home.

3. An exam on BYOD
Lecturers are more often using computer programmes and assessment tools during a course. It is now possible to use this programme (any programme) in the exam. This way, the students can use their own laptop and use the programme with the files in the exam. This gives them confidence and makes them less nervous, than a situation which they are not used to. It is possible to organise the exam in a lecture room or it also possible to take the exam from home.

Good practice: Digital exam on BYOD, with remote surveillance

4. Students that are abroad / not able to come to the UvA for the exam
There are different situations were students are not able to come to the University:
  • They are foreign residents and want to apply for a programme at UvA. Often, this requires an admission test of some sort. To travel to Amsterdam is often not possible.
  • They are abroad because of Internship, travel or professional sports.

Good practice: Admission test on distance

Checklist

1. Checking the costs
Not sure if you want to use remote online surveillance for your exam? We have made an overview of the costs per scenario. Here you can download the Cost Overview

2. Arranging location
Before you request the surveillance for your exam, it is important that you have thought of a location. If you want to organise the exam in a lecture or computer room, you will have to arrange this prior to the inquiry of remote surveillance.

3. Informing students
The course coordinator is responsible for the communication to the students. When the decision is made for remote online surveillance it is important to notify the students as soon as possible. We have made a manual for the students with important information. Here you can download the Students Manual

4. Reading the Lecturers manual
Here you can download the Lecturers Manual
Not to worry, the ICTO-FNWI team will give support during the whole proces.

5. Setting up the exam
Is the exam already digital? If not, please read the information about digitising your exam: Plaza digital exam
