Situation before the intervention

The formative exam and the final exam were organised in the digital exam room of the UvA. For the resit, the digital exam room was too expensive and it was not available.


The resit was taken online with surveillance on distance.

Reason to choose for surveillance on distance
The lecturer has developed the exam in Remindo, an examination application used frequently by lecturers of the UvA. The formative exam and the final exam were organised in the digital exam room of the UvA. For the resit, the digital exam room was too expensive and it was not available. Also, on the time of the exam, the lecturer was not available. At least not the whole time. Since the lecturer has the responsibility of arranging the surveillance, he wondered if it was possible to organise a remote exam, were the students can stay at home during the exam. After discussing it within the organisation, we decided that it is in fact possible. Also we really wanted to do this experiment and see if this can be a solution for resits in the future with the same problem.


The organisation of the online surveillance went well. Because it was a resit we didn’t know how many students we could expect. The lecturer had to send an email, asking the student to indicate if they would attend the resit. This caused some problems, because not all the students received the email.

During the exam we could see if all the students were in the exam and we manually gave access to the exam in Remindo. Because of the new feature of ProctorExam called ‘Vigilate’, we could monitor the students during the exam. This is a really useful new feature, which allows us to better in control during the exam.

The communication to the students could be better. We have experience with ProctorExam Pro, but we mainly organised it for students who are doing an online course. For those students it was clear what they could expect, because they have been notified from the beginning of the course and had all the information they needed to prepare for the exam.

For this resit, the students were notified quite late and didn’t receive all the information. For example, they didn’t know that they had to clear the desk. This caused stress at the beginning of the exam. We therefor developed a student manual, which is a bit more elaborate than the one of ProctorExam.

Reaction of the students

What we can see in the reaction of the students is that they were not really unhappy with the exam, but that they were maybe a bit overwhelmed with this new way of examination. As said be before, the communication could be better, which didn’t allow the students to be prepared well enough. This caused stress and discomfort during the exam. They felt like they were being watched and this made them nervous. On the other hand, having this experience also made them think of new ways to have the exam and also some very positive reactions were stated in the survey.
